Review: Beyond The Rift by Alana Ankh

Across the centuries, the Nikari, a race of vicious elemental mages, have built an empire, bringing an entire continent to its knees. The course of history seems set… until one innocent Andari mage changes everything and claims a greater prize—the heart of the Nikari emperor.

Behnivyr ‘Ivy’ Erethe knows his duty is to wed another Andari Pure-Blood. Craving one moment of freedom before his loveless bonding, he escapes his father’s suffocating protection and goes to a masquerade ball, only to unexpectedly meet a mysterious Nikari named Kris. Kris makes Ivy ache with a need he barely dares to acknowledge. One kiss, one dance—and Ivy’s life changes forever. Unbeknownst to Ivy, Kris is actually Kristelien Fezenda, the Nikari emperor. Forced to make a difficult choice, Ivy picks love over duty and becomes Kris’s concubine.

Poorly prepared for the whirlwind of emotion Ivy summons inside him, Kris now faces the hardest battle of his life. In a ruthless world where all weakness is exploited, where allies become enemies in the blink of an eye, where love can mean death, he will have to defeat more than his own personal demons to breach the rift between him and Ivy.

I read Alana’s very first book not long after it came out and loved it. I then read her second book and loved it as well. When I saw this one come out I had to read it. To the point that whatever I was in the process of reading got paused so I could read this book. Pretty darn happy that I did because I fell in LOVE with the world Alana created. She built the world and immersed me in it almost effortlessly. I felt like I was there from the very beginning of the book. The story never lagged for me and I never felt like there wasn’t a purpose to the scene. Too many times fantasy books lose their way because the only point of a scene is “world building” and I get bored. Not the case with this book. Kris and Ivy’s love was quick to build but they both had trouble showing it within the confines of what is acceptable behavior for their roles. The events that cause Kris to harm Ivy are heartbreaking to read but I loved how they started over. This book has such a beautiful ending and I cannot wait to read the next book in this series.

About Alana:
I’m Alana, and I write M/M. That’s GLBT romance for a more… elaborate term.  I may or may not be a hopeless romantic.  Who am I kidding? My site tagline is “because love is forever” – so hell yeah, I’m in love with love.

I also think love can be painful, heartbreaking, but also fun, corny, and a little silly.  Love is different for everyone and anyone – and in my books, I try to celebrate that.

Oh, I guess here is where I mention that I love writing fantasy, sci-fi and paranormal. But, don’t let that bring you down. I assure you that even if my boys have scales, fur, claws, fangs – or whatever else occurs to me – they’re really very nice people. Most of the time. Well… Most of them are nice, but I assure you, all of them deserve love and a HEA.

So I guess that settles it. I’m Alana Ankh, and I’m an addict – to happily-ever-afters and sexy, hot men. Join me on the dark side! We’ve got cookies!
